Luis Duarte Costa
President, Portuguese Society of Internal Medicine

Dr. Costa is the President of the Portuguese Society of Internal Medicine. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Nova Medical School in Lisbon, Portugal, in 2000. After completing his general internship in Lisbon (2001–2002), he pursued his residency in internal medicine (2003–2008) in the same city. Since 2008, Dr. Costa has served as an internal medicine physician at Hospital da Luz Lisboa, where he became Director of Emergency Adult Care in 2016. His involvement with the Portuguese Society of Internal Medicine began in 2010 as a board member, leading to his election as President in 2024. Additionally, he served as co-editor of the Portuguese Internal Medicine Journal and chief editor of the Portuguese Case Reports Journal from 2016 to 2024.

Juan Manuel Calipuy Gálvez
President, Peruvian Society of Internal Medicine

Dr. Juan Manuel Calipuy Gálvez received his internal medicine training at Cayetano Heredia University in Peru. He currently serves as an assistant physician in the Internal Medicine Department at Alberto Sabogal Sologuren National Hospital of EsSalud. In addition to his clinical work, he teaches courses in semiology and internal medicine for undergraduate students. He is also a sub-investigator in clinical trials focusing on medications for diabetes and hypertension. Dr. Calipuy is the President of the Peruvian Society of Internal Medicine.            

Ramón Jesús Falcón
President, Paraguayan Society of Internal Medicine

Dr. Ramón Jesús Falcón is the Head of the Internal Medicine Guard Service at the Central Hospital of the Social Security Institute (Instituto de Previsión Social) and the Head of the Internal Medicine Ward at the General Hospital of Luque. He is also an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at multiple institutions, including the Catholic University Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, Universidad del Norte (UNINORTE), and the University of Integration of the Americas (UNIDA). Dr. Falcón earned his medical degree from the National University of Itapúa – Faculty of Medicine and completed his internal medicine training at the Catholic University Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, Central Hospital of the Social Security Institute. He also holds a postgraduate degree in Higher University Teaching and a specialization in Higher University Didactics from the Catholic University Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. Additionally, he completed a Master’s in Higher Medical Teaching from the National University of Asunción. Dr. Falcón is the President of the Paraguayan Society of Internal Medicine for the 2023–2025 term.  

Krishantha Jayasekera
President, Sri Lanka College of Internal Medicine

Dr. Krishantha Jayasekera is a specialist in internal medicine at the National Hospital Galle in Sri Lanka. He obtained his MBBS from the University of Colombo in 1996, graduating with second-class honors, and completed his MD in Internal Medicine in 2003. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London) in 2016 and a Fellow of the Ceylon College of Physicians in 2017. His clinical and research interests include the use of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and high-flow nasal oxygen (HFNO) in acute respiratory failure, point-of-care sonography in acute medicine, clinical and laboratory predictors of fluid leakage in dengue, and quality improvement in curative healthcare. Dr. Jayasekera currently serves as the President of the Sri Lanka College of Internal Medicine.

Mumtaz Patel
President, Royal College of Physicians London

Dr. Mumtaz Patel is a Consultant Nephrologist based in Manchester, UK, and the acting President of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), London. She also serves as a Postgraduate Associate Dean for NHS England. In 2023, she was elected Senior Censor and Vice President for Education and Training at the RCP, following a successful three-year term as Global Vice President (2020–2023). Dr. Patel graduated with honors from the University of Manchester in 1996, obtained her MRCP (UK) in 2000, and earned a PhD in 2006 focusing on the genetics of lupus nephritis. She has been a Consultant Nephrologist at Manchester University Hospitals since 2007. Her leadership roles have included serving as a Renal Training Programme Director, RCP Regional Advisor, and Clinical Lead for Quality at JRCPTB. She was awarded FRCP in 2011 and earned an MSc in Medical Education with distinction in 2014. Her research interests include assessment in medical education, supporting doctors in difficulty, differential attainment, and fairness in medical education. She has published extensively and presented at national and international conferences.

Chairat Permpikul
President, Royal College of Physicians of Thailand

Dr. Chairat Permpikul is a professor of medicine and an intensivist at Siriraj Hospital, Thailand’s first and largest referral medical school, located in central Bangkok. His research focuses on sepsis resuscitation and intensive care unit (ICU) management. Notable studies include the early use of low-dose norepinephrine in sepsis resuscitation (CENSER trial) and the application of hydrocortisone in early sepsis-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Beyond his role as the President of the Royal College of Physicians of Thailand, Dr. Permpikul is a national leader in ICU service planning, dedicated to improving the quality of critical care across the country. 

Tavs Qvist
President, Danish Society of Internal Medicine   

Tavs Qvist, MD, PhD, is the President of the Danish Society of Internal Medicine. He is a physician and researcher in the Department of Infectious Diseases at Rigshospitalet, Denmark’s largest and most specialized hospital, located in Copenhagen. His clinical expertise focuses on the management of multidrug-resistant bacteria, particularly in patients with cystic fibrosis and primary ciliary dyskinesia. Dr. Qvist was awarded the 2018 Gerd Döring Award for exceptional early-career European scientists.

Daniel Norberto Romano
President, Buenos Aires Society of Internal Medicine

Dr. Daniel Romano is the Head of the External Consulting Department at Hospital General de Agudos Parmenio Piñero in Buenos Aires. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Buenos Aires and completed his internal medicine training at Escuela Argentina de Medicina Interna de Buenos Aires. He also holds a Clinical Medicine Specialist certification from Argentina’s Ministry of Health. In addition to his core medical training, Dr. Romano has specialized in medical auditing (Universidad de Buenos Aires), occupational medicine, and sports medicine. He has authored several research publications and has been recognized with the Rodolfo A. Eyherabide Award and the Labor Asistencial Award from the University of Buenos Aires. Dr. Romano is the President of the Buenos Aires Society of Internal Medicine for the 2024–2026 term.
